NAAB International Certification

National Architectural Accrediting Board - NAAB

Sello de NAAB

The Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, has received the International Certification designation from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) for the Bachelor of Fundamentals in Architecture + Master in Architecture degree. International Certification, formerly known as “substantial equivalency,” was granted in 2015 for a term of six years.

The term “International Certification” identifies a program as comparable in educational outcomes in all significant aspects to a program accredited by the NAAB in the United States and indicates that it provides an educational experience meeting acceptable standards, even though such program may differ in format or method of delivery. In order to maintain the designation, the program must be visited again in the sixth year of the designation.

Programs with International Certification are not formally “accredited” as that term is used with reference to programs in the United States, and they may not refer to their programs as “accredited” by the NAAB. However, students who graduate from International Certification programs are able to apply for individualized review of their credentials on an expedited basis by the Educational Evaluation Services for Architects program, administered by the NAAB on behalf of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).

The advise of the current process: Essentially, the customer needs to contact NAAB to confirm whether or not his or her university is part of the SE program. NAAB would need to know what institution and program the customer graduated from and when the customer graduated in order to know whether or not the program was substantially equivalent at the time. If so, NAAB would typically e-mail Customer Relations approving the fee reduction so that the NCARB Record can reflect and charge the reduced fee.

NAAB – International Certification

National Architectural Accrediting Board - NAAB
